There’s a moment, just before the first note lands, when the cathedral seems to hold its breath. Six hundred years of stone, soot and stained glass — and then suddenly, light. It spills across the vaulted ceiling, pours down the widest nave in England, and turns every pillar into a screen. The opening chord of a familiar Mancunian anthem rolls through the air, and the building, somehow, sings back.

Manchester Cathedral is already one of the city’s most atmospheric landmarks, with its Gothic arches, stained glass, carved woodwork and centuries of history giving the space a sense of occasion before the lights even begin. For LUMINISCENCE, that setting becomes part of the experience, as 360° projections move across the stonework, columns, ceilings and choir stalls, turning the Cathedral into a living canvas of colour, music and storytelling that captures the heart of the city in a single evening.

Right now, the cathedral is home to LUMINISCENCE, a walk-through immersive show backed by a live orchestra and built around songs by The Verve, Joy Division, Oasis, Elbow and more. New choral arrangements of these Manchester classics are performed by the Collectives Gospel Choir, alongside a specially commissioned script by BAFTA-winning writer Tim Whitnall and narration from actor Christopher Eccleston

It is a walk-through experience rather than a sit-down show, so you move with the music — past illuminated stonework, through pools of colour, beneath angels that suddenly look very awake.

The experience lasts around 45 minutes and is designed as a walk-through show, with visitors moving through the Cathedral as the projections, narration and music unfold around them. Tickets are booked online in advance, and the venue is Manchester Cathedral on Victoria Street, a short walk from Manchester Victoria and the Exchange Square tram stop.
